SUMMER 2020 WELCOME
Why charities need your support more than ever...
T
he COVID-19 pandemic has had a terrible effect on
business and the economy, but it’s the vulnerable and the charities that support them that may be impacted most.
With many fund-raising events throughout the country this year being
cancelled, including the London Marathon (which last year raised around £367m for charities), the very survival of many charities is threatened.
In this issue we are promoting four charities, (see opposite) which we believe deserve your support, and any donations to them would be more than gratefully received.
Looking ahead, we have decided to devote a page in each issue to support charities.
If you would like to nominate a charity you think is worth a mention in this new section, we would love to hear from you.
Plesea email your choice to the editor
editor@citysecuritymagazine.com and we will try to help where we can.
New normal – the new mantra T
here are some words and phrases that have been well-used to describe the three months since we last published City Security
magazine: unprecedented, once in a century, crisis, difficult, challenging, uncertain times. In this instance, the use of these words does not exaggerate the predicament in which we find ourselves.
The global pandemic has had a catastrophic impact on our world. Of particular
concern for the security sector was the news in May from the Office of National Statistics that male security guards working in the UK are at significant risk of dying from COVID-19, with one of the highest death rates: 45.7 deaths per 100,000.
But other words have also had precedence, such as heroic efforts, resilience and the latest mantra – the new normal. In this issue, we try to cover the impact of COVID-19 on the security sector in the round: the response from all quarters and the efforts to move now into the recovery phase and beyond. It is striking how many of our contributors acknowledge that good security is largely about communicating well with people. This will be emphasised further in the months to come, as we grapple with the new measures required.
We look at some specific areas of interest for those in security, such as the designation of key worker status for security guards, health and safety in hotels, thermal camera systems and the impact of Covid-19 on close protection.
We also hear from the London Air Ambulance and the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry on how they’ve supported the NHS in London, together with updates from the City of London Police and the Fire and Rescue Service.
As we move forward to the end of lockdown and working and living with COVID-19, we wish all our readers a safe three months ahead. We thank you for your continued support, in particular our advertisers, without whose support we would not be able to bring you this magazine.
