his is a critical moment for the world. As we were preparing this edition, Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine in a fast-moving situation. This is a clear demonstration of how we live in a highly unpredictable world where risk management, security and resilience, together with the people and systems that support them remain of critical importance.


This conflict is likely to have wide-ranging long-term implications for everyone working in security and contingency planning. Well-rehearsed plans are put into action for a variety of situations including demonstrations; international travel; the repatriation of expats; and the fall-out from the extensive economic sanctions being applied on Russia.

At the same moment, restrictions around COVID-19 have been lifted and security practitioners must adjust to the new environment, as well as reflect on lessons learned over the last two years.


Critical weather incidents continue, with flooding and wind damage following an unprecedented four consecutive storms in the UK.


In response and in support of everyone involved in security, we aim to provide a full picture of current risk and security management good practice. This includes how security professionals can prepare for the Protect Duty, with a review of the consultation report from Figen Murray, whose son Martyn died in the Manchester Arena attack and who is now spearheading developments in this area.


Technology plays an ever-increasing role in security. In this edition, we shine a light on a number of key areas, including interlocks and safe practice around gate manufacture and installation. We also examine a variety of software systems that can support security organisations. You may be very familiar with these kinds of systems, or they may be new to you. Whatever your situation, we hope to fill any gaps in your knowledge.


We are delighted to welcome a new chief officer team to the City of London Police and wish them every success in the City of London.


We are also very pleased to include a piece on the “Risk Bowtie” from Rick Mounfield, who has recently announced he is moving on from his role as Chief Executive at the Security Institute after achieving a great deal in his time there. We’d like to wish Rick all the best in his new role.


In spring, come and meet us at our stand at IFSEC, May 17-19 at ExCel. We will also be visiting the Security Event, 5-7 April, and CT Expo, 8-9 June.


We must congratulate all the finalists in our Security Article of the Year Award. The top three articles that captured the most votes were: ‘Security in 2021 and beyond’ by Darren Read, Amulet Security; ‘Security - a career of choice?’ by Houdah Al-Hakim, Quick Click Security; and ‘A holistic approach to security’ by Mike O'Neill, Optimal Risk.


The winner will be presented with a plaque at the next City of London Crime Prevention Association meeting on 21 March 2022. Finally, a thank you to our supporters of the Award: City of London Crime Prevention Association, Genetec and University of St Andrews.
