SECURITY ISSUE 67 - SPRING 2018

ur spring edition focuses on counter terrorism efforts with a selection of contributions from those working in security in both the public and private

sector. There is a strong sense of purpose and willingness for all areas to work together in the face of the ongoing Severe Threat level in the UK.

The Deputy Director, Protect and Prepare from National Counter Terrorism Policing HQ (NCTPHQ) describes the pressures facing front-line policing and the need to forge even stronger relationships and information sharing with those who can help.

There are updates on key counter terrorism partnership initiatives, including the national rollout of Cross-sector Safety and Security Communication (CCSC) and how Project Servator is being made available across all UK police forces in 2018.

The security providers offer their insights into how the sector is responding to the terrorist threat, including a call for greater recognition of the contribution of the private sector. The changing role of the security officer is discussed, emphasising how this is at the heart of reducing and managing risk.

In other areas of counter terror activity, we cover the design of building security with an invitation for those involved to join the newly formed Security Institute Built Environment Security Special Interest Group.

Our coverage of counter terrorism will continue in our summer issue which will focus on security technology. If you have ideas for articles or other feedback, please get in touch. City Security magazine aims to support the ongoing dialogue between policing and the private sector, sharing good practice and ideas, including guidance evolving from the step change summits.

A key learning from recent events in Oxford Street is the importance of using a credible source for information; this is particularly relevant for social media users. The local police force Twitter feed is generally a good place to start, such as @Met PoliceUK

Amongst others in policing, the New Year’s Honours List 2018 included City of London PCSO Rosamund Sweet receiving an MBE for services to policing and the community and PC Matthew Hone being awarded the Queen’s Police Medal (QPM) in recognition of his significant role in developing Project Servator. Our congratulations to these two and all others who have received awards.
