6 FESTIVAL OF BUSINESS

Helen Clayton Continued from Page 5

Helen added: “Day to day, everybody has a role to play, and opportunities to grab and hold onto.

“My mum always said that you only learn from your own mistakes, not the mistakes of others. Until you have lived through it, it is not real.”

She went on: “If people see leadership as a destination, it is not going to work, it is still part of the journey.

“You have to go and find feedback, ask for it, listen to it and do something with it.”

Helen also spoke of the importance of trust in the workplace and the need to act quickly if that element is lost and relationships break down.

Mo Isap is chief executive of IN4 Group and

a driving force in the tech sector. He provides skills, innovation and start-up growth services and is focused on breaking down the barriers of entry into digital technology.

He told delegates: “I’m really proud to say I’m a graduate of the management school of mess-ups.

“Leadership is about informed leadership and you can only be informed when you make mistakes. Success means you can start believing the hype. Mistakes keep you humble. When leaders lose humility and purpose the results that should have happened, don’t.”

Mo, who shared colourful stories of the beginnings of his business career in Manchester in the 1990s, added: “The human

factor of leadership cannot be understated.”

He said it was important to empower people and employ those who knew more than you. And he added: “The most important decision you are going to make is, are you going to ‘be’ or are you going to ‘do’.

“The first group want status, nice cars and that’s fine but they are not going to achieve as much as people who are going to ‘do’ stuff that is incredible.”

He added: “People can disappoint you, so be ready to be disappointed.

“You have to offer honesty and trust before you receive it back. If you are not going to do that as a leader don’t expect it from anyone else.”
