Lessons from history on Europe
oon the UK will have a new government after the snap election called by Theresa May, and all the implications that will have for the media. The prime minister said she
called the election to give her a mandate for negotiations over Brexit. Britain’s departure
from Europe is one of the biggest events in recent history and feelings towards Europe can run high. Our main feature this edition looks at how Britain’s attitude to Europe, as portrayed through the media has long been a fraught one. It’s written by Denis MacShane, the former minister, former president of the NUJ, and an ardent Europhile. Also on the subject of how we report the institutions that
govern our lives we look at the dwindling presence of public affairs in the training of journalists. We also explore the ethical issues of how child abuse should be investigated and reported and the protection of sources in Ireland. In our news we report more worrying developments at
Newsquest with the scrapping of its second subbing hub and a move towards writing to fit, further marginalising the editing and sub-editing processes. Lots to think about and campaign for as we embark on a new legislative programme.
