Snapshots in time: UNHCR at 70
UNHCR has devoted the past 70 years towards championing the rights of people forced to flee and the stateless, and providing life-saving aid to those in need.
As we look ahead towards helping refugees build better futures, we reflect on our history and the dedication and commitment towards the people UNHCR is honoured to serve — many of whom have been graciously welcomed by Canada.

1979. A Buddhist temple is a meeting place for the community of Vietnamese refugees resettled in the Montreal area.
1979. Refugees from Vietnam trying out maple sugar at a “sugar party” in Quebec.
Seven decades on, with more than 80 million people forcibly displaced worldwide today, our work remains essential. Thank you for your continued support.
1986. Jean-Pierre Hocké (right) the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, presents Jeanne Sauvé, the Governor General of Canada, with the Nansen Award. The annual honour was awarded to the People of Canada in 1986.
1989. Voluntary repatriation of Namibian refugees at Lubango Airport, southern Angola.
