A lens on a new life


Hany’s photos in the camp are


poignant, his accompanying captions illuminating life from his perspective. He says, “I


think with photography


that you should take the picture in your mind first.” He treats the camera as an extension of his mind and body, so that taking a photo is much more than figuring out settings and pressing the shutter.


In one of the


photos taken of his mother’s house keys, he says in his daily journal:

A Tearful Laugh. It was simultaneously funny and sad when I asked my mom: “Why did you bring the house keys with you?” And without an answer everyone began to laugh, because these keys are useless as they are the keys to a house that is almost completely destroyed. My mom’s laugh quickly turned into tears that paved their path onto her cheeks and silenced the sound of that brilliant laugh… I also cried after that scene.
