Long before modern tax laws, Americans gave freely to causes that helped those in need. Some of the earliest charitable organizations even predate the nation itself. Institutions such as Harvard (founded in 1636) and the Library Company of Philadelphia (1721) were established for public good. Later, organizations like the Pennsylvania Abolition Society (1775) advanced humanitarian causes.
