Orange Bank finally launches with a target of two million customers

F

rench telecom company Orange has revealed that it will be launching its new online banking service, which has been in the works for some time, this month.

The telecom giant first announced that the bank would be live in July, following an employee-only test in May. In the end, it postponed this launch due to a need to “extend and broaden” the testing phase.

According to Reuters, the new launch date has been set as 2 November. Customers will gain access to a mobile payment service, free debit card and an online application that will allow transfers via text message.

Orange is hoping to generate €400 million in revenues by 2018 and pull in more than two million customers. By comparison, France’s largest existing online banks – ING Direct and Société Générale’s Boursorama – have one million users each.

Orange Bank was formed following the acquisition of Groupama Banque by the French telecom. It nabbed 65% back in April 2016 for an undisclosed fee. Groupama Banque customers were given the option of signing up to the new service straight away.

Leeds Building Society sees its new automation move bear fruit

L

eeds Building Society is seeing higher performance as a result of robotic processing, according to its CIO Tom Clark. Talking to Computing Today, Clark explained that robotic automation had helped improve the organisation’s agile capability.

“We’ve improved our agile capability through robotic processing,” said Clark. “That enables manual processes to be automated. We’ve used it to reduce customer turnaround times [the time taken to turn an initial customer query into a full package]. So rather than a piece of work ending up in a queue for someone to work on, a robot can work on it in the background.”

The Building Society uses Blue Prism for its robotic process automation, which on a basic level does the work of moving data and workloads between systems, according to Clark. This automation hasn’t meant a loss of jobs, but it has freed staff up to work on more valuable strategic work.

He also said that “the staffing levels across the business have increased significantly” since he joined four years ago, as there have been around 500 new hires. According to Clark, this is part of the bi-modal or ‘two-speed IT’ model at Leeds Building Society.

Starling launches business service U

K challenger Starling Bank has launched its new Starling for Business service, designed to cater towards SMEs, entrepreneurs and small business owners.

The business banking accounts will include accounting services, linked invoicing and real-time international payments.

“A huge group of people exist who need more than a personal current account but aren’t quite a small business,” said Starling founder and CEO, Anne Boden.

Starling Bank plans for the service to go live in early 2018, after an initial period of testing at the end of the year.
