the president’s message

ourselves up for success in the coming years. Tis month the Chapter held our Annual LEAD (Lead- ership Education And Development) Workshop. All Directors and Committee Chairs were invited to at- tend this important training session and it was well- attended, even though it started at 8:00am.

A

During the 2-plus hour work- shop, we reviewed up to date information about Community Associations in California (and the US in general), went over the Chapter-specific informa- tion that everyone serving in those capacities needs to know (Bylaws, Policies and Proce- dures, etc.) and discussed our roles and how we all fit into the Chapter support structure that is our main responsibility to our members. Our ED, Rachel Sel- wan, put together an amazingly comprehensive, well-organized and interesting presentation that served as the basis for our discussions and put a framework around our organization as a whole.

Te reason I bring that up is to let you all know that we have come a long way in the last few years. Tis was the third workshop I have attended since I became a Director and it was by far the best. What was then a loose agenda of reviewing the general policies and signing a few ethics documents has become a professional and meaningful workshop that requires

s I prepare to ‘hand off’ the Chapter to in- coming President Tina Keele, I have started thinking about making sure we are setting

participation from the Chapter’s entire Leadership Team. Tere were a lot of familiar faces in that room, but many who were becoming first-time leaders for the Chapter. And I know many will continue to lead for years, as Chairpersons and as future Board members.

It has always been a goal of mine to carry on the progress the Chapter has made over the last few years in establishing a succession plan for leadership. In many ways it is like running a professional sports team – take young players (new members), expose them to knowledgeable and committed coaches (veteran members and committee mem- bers), develop their skills and tal- ents (get them on a committee), encourage them to take the lead on projects (committee chair- persons) and help them become leaders in their own right (direc- tors).

I feel like we are going in the right direction. We have a great variety of skill and experience, diversity and focus at the leadership level

in the Chapter – as well as top-notch professional management to execute on a day-to-day basis. Every event I attend I see new faces eager to get involved and familiar friends that have already served for years, and may again in the future. Our Chapter is growing each year (we are now a medium-sized chapter in case you didn’t get that memo!) and our future is looking more and more secure. Come join us – I can promise that being part of something larger than yourself is well worth it.
