IN THIS ISSUE FINALLY
With the recent passing of Harry Murphy at Modern Machinery, Northern Ireland and David Simpson of Eltham Welding, London, we are reminded of the huge impact that the family ownership of businesses has on the welding industry. We offer our sincere condolences to both these families for their very recent loss. The U.K. Government collects some £740 Billion in taxes every year and family businesses contribute some £149 Billion to this sum annually and further represent some £549 Billion to the economy. As a nation of shopkeepers we continue the cherished responsibility for creating the country’s wealth and the all-important part we play in our nation’s future.
On April 11th at the Hilton Metropole NEC, we will attend the Welding World awards and some of the winners are likely to represent family-owned companies somewhere in the industry, worldwide. The industry owes its very existence to many families who continue to innovate, develop, manufacture, service, support and supply the industry and both Harry Murphy and David Simpson are remembered for the part they played and their families continue to support into the future. Sustaining a family business or winning a Welding World Award, we are all stars in the eyes of our family and the country, let’s raise a glass to them all on the 11th April.
