For educators planning to implement REACH in your classroom or at your sailing center, you most likely have several questions. The next few sections provide information on implementation designs and formats and include case studies of specific programs that have successfully implemented REACH. u How Do I Implement REACH? u REACH Implementation Designs u Program Formats u Instructional Designs u Case Studies


You will need to select an implementation method that fits your resources and classroom setting. Please read through the following segments to identify a model that best suits your needs as an educator and the resources available to your students. All instruction should be implemented utilizing Inquiry-Based Instruction. Please read through the section on Inquiry-Based instruction before implementing any REACH modules.

REACH is most successfully implemented when formal and informal educators collaborate with local content experts connecting students to scientists, engineers, and future career opportunities. Please refer to the list of community resources on page 16 that may be helpful in your area.


u Networking & Community Resources Use this curriculum as a resource when providing instruction to middle school students. Educators should implement at least one part of each module that applies to their educational setting and the background knowledge of their students. All programs can implement portions of all ten modules. Selecting the appropriate parts of the modules and which activities to implement will depend on the resources and objectives of your program.


u Modules 1-10


Each module includes the Subject Areas, Summary, Duration, Skills, Sailing Skills, Vocabulary, Standards, Objectives, Materials, Information for Sailing Centers, Information for Formal Classroom Settings, Career Connections, Procedure, Student Sheets, and Resources. All modules are correlated to the K-12 Framework for Science Education and the Common Core Standards. There charts are on pages 123 & 124. The modules are also correlated to US Sailing’s Learn Sailing Right! Beginner and Intermediate - the National Standard for Quality Sailing Instruction. The correlation is noted in the title block of each module using the abbreviation “LSR”. It is the responsibility of the educator to work with their local schools to correlate the modules to your state standards and your school curriculum.
