SOUQ WAQIF
East-West/West-East is a mysterious half-mile-long succession of soaring metal frames installed by the artist Richard Serra. More recent acqui- sitions include mammoth standout sculptures by Jeff Koons and Olafur Eliasson, and temporary exhibi- tions regularly showcase the world’s biggest creative talents. Londoners used to the queues and crowds of this city’s blockbuster openings will find that discovering art in and around Doha is a remarkably stress-free experience. And there’s much more to discover
besides. Voted the safest country in the world in the Numbeo Crime Index for the last five years running, Qatar
FUWAIRIT KITE BEACH RESORT
has carved out a niche as an espe- cially family-friendly destination. A sunnier sibling to its Hyde Park name- sake, Lusail Winter Wonderland is the country’s latest theme park that’s set to re-open later this year, while Doha’s many malls are like miniature towns, perhaps incorporating their own theatres, Venetian-style canals and virtual-reality gaming centres alongside more conventional collec- tions of shops and restaurants. Te country’s newest retail destination, Place Vendome, Qatar’s central, cafe- lined courtyard, houses a colossal dancing fountain. For more locally inspired souvenirs, head to Souq Waqif for traditional
homewares
and delicate handmade jewellery; at neighbouring Msheireb Downtown Doha, Qatari designers’ showrooms sell curios, accessories and fashion. And just up the road from Place
Vendome Qatar, by the huge honey- hued Lusail Stadium where Lionel Messi and his Argentina teammates won the World Cup in thrilling fash- ioon, the sweeping Lusail Boulevard is an entirely new shopping, enter- tainment and retail district whose boutiques and restaurants are further bolstering Qatar’s standing as a something-for-everyone holiday destination. As is customary, the location is crowned with ambitious public art and striking architecture, namely a 30-metre-long silver-sheen whale shark suspended between the four spiralling, lilac-tinted Lusail Towers designed by London’s Foster + Partners. Tat interplay could serve as an allegory for Qatar more generally, where a deep-rooted affec- tion for the country’s heritage is always apparent even as the nation looks to the future so ambitiously.
