Tere have been many recent advances in the treatment of knee conditions. Mr Hersh Deo guides you through the options

Mr Hersh Deo is a leading consultant orthopaedic surgeon based in East Anglia. He works at the James Paget University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Spire Norwich Hospital. He specialises in knee preservation surgery. He’s pioneered the use of artificial graſt for the treatment of recurrent patellar dislocation.

KNEE PAIN: NON-SURGICAL OPTIONS • Weight loss: There’s a proven link between weight loss and reduction of knee pain.

• Activity modification: Avoidance of high-impact and twisting movements and sports

• Physiotherapy will improve certain knee conditions such as knee instability

• Supplements • Oral and topical painkillers • Injections: Steroid or hyaluronic acid injections, such as Ostenil Plus • Hinged or unloader knee braces

KNEE PAIN: SURGICAL OPTIONS • Keyhole surgery: a great deal can be achieved via keyhole surgery, eg, cartilage repair (micro fracture),

meniscal repair, ACL reconstruction.

• Open cartilage repair: Larger defects can be covered by an artificial cartilage covering

• Alignment procedures: Early arthritis on one side of the knee in younger, active patients can be treated by realigning the leg (high tibial osteotomy).

• Partial knee replacements: Rather than replacing the whole knee if one part is arthritic, any of the knee’s three compartments can be replaced individually by partial joint replacements.

• Advanced bearing surfaces in total joint replacement.

Personalised knee replacements with robotic assistance

DR KHAN

While total knee replacements have excellent long-term implant survival rates, the functional outcomes aren’t as good as hip replacements. Some 20% of patients still aren’t happy with the outcome. One of the reasons may be that the universal alignment target used with traditional knee replacements may not be the correct target for many patients. Recent studies
