A LEGENDARY TRANSFORMATION

BEACH CAFÉ

Tintagel’s Beach Café, which looks out to the island and the beautiful cove below, is the perfect spot for groups to enjoy a bite to eat.

With a focus on fresh, seasonal and local food, the menu is packed with seaside favourites such as fish and chips, Cornish oggies and cream teas. The café seats 40 inside and 48 on the terrace – and best of all, members of pre- booked groups of 11 or more can enjoy a 10% discount to take advantage of the local specialities on the menu. Their coach driver and tour leader each receive a generous £10 voucher for lunch, as well as free site admission.

Groups heading to Tintagel Castle once the bridge is open next year will be more able to fully enjoy exploring the history of the Cornish castle and the crucial role legends have played in shaping the site visitors see today.

The centrepiece of recently installed interpretation is a bronze sculpture, inspired by both the legend of King Arthur and the historic kings and royal figures associated with Tintagel. Standing on the headland, this imposing eight-foot figure of a king watches over his realm, the land ahead of him and the Atlantic ocean beyond.

A series of panels around the 18-acre site reveal 1,500 years of Tintagel’s past – from thriving trading port, to royal stronghold, to a castle of romantic legend. Elsewhere, groups can discover a stone compass which points to places across the British Isles connected with the Arthurian legend, while engraved stepping stones around the island garden tell the romantic medieval tale of Tristan and Iseult. For those who head down to the beach, there’s a discreet carved face representing Merlin, a figure associated with the site since the 12th century.

Visitors can also explore the ruined castle walls, wander through the remains of houses built between the 5th and 7th centuries AD and take in an exhibition which features historic artefacts discovered at the site and a 3D model of Tintagel Island showing how the site has developed through time.

GROUP DISCOUNTS Groups receive a discount at all English Heritage properties. One tour leader and one coach driver are admitted free with each

group (and do not count towards group numbers). Free familiarisation visits can be arranged for the travel trade. Special themed tours are available for pre-booked groups at many properties.
