Winning ways


Hull has passed the title of UK City of Culture to Coventry. Samantha Mayling looks at what the city offers visitors, ahead of its year in the spotlight in 2021

The baton has been passed from Hull, which held the title during 2017. It is estimated that City of Culture


status brought a boost of £60 million to Hull’s economy in 2017 and the city saw more than £1 billion of investment since it won the title in 2013. Coventry beat off competition from


Paisley, Stoke-on-Trent, Sunderland and Swansea to win the honour – plus a £3 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.


The winning bid impressed the judges with its focus on “youth, diversity and the scale of impact not only in Coventry but across the UK as a whole”. Laura McMillan, director of operations


and legacy at the Coventry City of Culture Trust, said: “Bidding for and winning UK City of Culture has well and truly put Coventry on the map. “It has shone a light on the city that
