Little steps can help build momentum A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR


During the coverage of major sporting events, pundits will often discuss the contribution of momentum to the result. Often intangible, this mysterious and almost irreversible force is


regularly credited with pushing one individual or team over the line. On the face of it, this week’s confirmation of a further relaxation of lockdown rules in England was just another small step towards a sense of normality returning. But as people start to venture out more – and providing there is no significant second wave – so they will start to feel more comfortable returning to the habits and priorities that were largely put on hold at the start of the crisis. Like the relaxation of guidance at home, the planned reintroduction


of overseas holidays from next month should also be viewed in context, with vastly reduced capacity to a limited number of destinations (pages 4 and 5). Yet it was only a few weeks ago that many industry leaders felt the summer would be a write-off, and there is a vast difference between some income and none at all for those in a position to restart. The hospitality sector will hope that people dipping their toe in the water with a first visit to a


pub garden will signal the start of a recovery. Likewise, the travel trade will hope these first trips will provide a spark for others to commit to a much-needed holiday this summer or beyond. The road to recovery will be long, but an industry starved of positivity for several months will be desperate to seize on any momentum it can.
