Looing bac, the fi rst six to nine months were without doubt the steepest part of the learning curve.
n ay , we sold our old home and moved into rented accommodation to release the funds needed to mae the build possible. t was another moment where the proect stopped being theoretical and became very real. Building close to the coast in umbria
has brought its own challenges. ind and horiontal rain are constant factors, and they have a habit of fi nding their way through the smallest gaps. t uicly teaches you that detailing and build uality matter because the environment will test them.
espite everything, there has been a huge amount to enoy. eeing the timber frame go up on anuary was a genuine turning point suddenly the proect felt real. aling through the rooms for the fi rst time, iobhann understood space in a way drawings never uite capture. ecisions that once felt abstract suddenly became tangible. ne thing ve genuinely enoyed is how much the process forces you to engage. n a self-build, decisions are your decisions. ou can tae advice and learn from others, but ultimately this is your house. hether its choosing the right heat pump or deciding how
much control you want from your phone, these are choices you will live with. ts worth taing the time to thin them through.
f had one piece of advice for anyone considering a self-build, it would be this slow down at the beginning and prioritise clarity. emember, this is your dream dont let others dilute it. clear framewor, whether thats a design
code, a good contractor, or a well- thought-through brief, maes everything else easier. wo years after reserving the plot, we moved into the completed house in ugust . urning a long-held idea into a real home has been incredibly satisfying, and am very proud of what we have achieved. ould do it again bsolutely.
