Building Fabric Sto helps refurbished homes shine brighter and greener
A refurbished housing development is benefi ting from an aesthetic, energy-effi cient exterior thanks to a Sto external wall insulation system. Located in Bordon, Hampshire, T e Pines features 96 former Ministry of Defence (MOD) properties, which have been transformed into modern two to three-bedroom houses and maisonettes. T e refurbishment has been completed by Project Worx Ltd on behalf of Annington, one of the UK’s largest private owners of residential property, most of which is occupied by military families. Square 1 Architectural Solutions specifi ed and installed the StxT erm Robust external wall insulation system to the exterior of the existing properties. Ideal for low to medium rise housing, StxT erm Robust prevents heat loss and eliminates thermal bridges to enhance energy effi ciency. By insulating the outer leaf of each property, the entire structure becomes warm and dry, reducing the risk of condensation and associated mould growth. T e installation of the system was completed with a fi nal coat of Stomix Silkotex HD render. T is cement-free, silicone resin render is available in a variety of colours, which enabled Annington to create facades with white, grey, blue, beige and yellow fi nishes. With a high level of water repellence, this render also off ers protection from weathering, damp and algae growth.

Demand for retrofi tted energy effi ciency products will help to drive sales of fenestration foam tape sealants in 2024, according to Andy Swiſt , sales and operations manager at ISO-Chemie. He believes the sealants’ market will remain buoyant over the next 12 months, seeing steady growth despite a challenging construction sector and wider infl ationary and economic pressures. In the face of a gloomy outlook in some quarters – a number of construction companies could go under in 2024 due to cost overruns – refurb projects, particularly in the social housing sector, where improved funding for projects is anticipated over the next 12 months to buoy the sector with an 11% growth forecast, are expected to get the green light to meet aff ordable housing needs. T is will see a strong focus on the use of foam sealants, with increased specifi cation of rapid product solutions to deliver greater energy conservation – particularly as fuel bills will remain high. Interest rates will also probably stabilise in 2024, boosting demand for more energy effi cient accommodation, says Andy Swiſt . T is in turn, will generate steady business for high performance sealants that reduce, or prevent thermal leakage, from around incorrectly fi tted window and door frames. He said: “T ere are eff ective products out there to ensure that energy effi ciency within buildings should never be overlooked or ignored – it’s a matter of designing in these products.”
