Note to parents
Réalta Litriú is a series of five Irish spelling activity books. Each Réalta Litriú book contains a full year’s spelling programme for your child, divided into easy-to-follow weekly units. Each unit covers a chosen theme or topic. Regular look-back chapters throughout the book ensure revision and reinforcement of your child’s work throughout the year.
How this book works:
• On Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, your child will learn a new set of daily spellings.
• Thursday is a revision day; spellings introduced from Monday to Wednesday will be revised on Thursdays. There are no new spellings to be learned on Thursdays.
• On Fridays, a weekly test can be carried out to check your child’s progress with their weekly spellings. Tests and test scores can be recorded at the back of this book.
c
• This book uses a spelling strategy known as ‘look, say, cover, write, check’ to help your child learn their spellings. This method is outlined below:
Look (Féach): Look at the word and try to memorise it. Say (Abair): Say the word out loud. Cover (Clúdaigh): Cover the word. Write (Scríobh): Write the word while the spellings list is still covered. Check (Seiceáil): Check if your answer is correct! If your answer is incorrect, follow these steps and try again.
Each day’s learning of spellings should take approximately 10 minutes.
The Réalta Litriú series is supported by audio resources containing the correct pronounciation of your child’s weekly spelling words. These are available for you to access at
