Indie icons
It does provide the ranking though, and at the top of the list is the Booker Prize-shortlisted The Land in Winter by Andrew Miller ( 1) – one of 41 titles from the General & Literary Fiction (G&LF) category that has made it onto the Indie Top 50 list. It is not a surprise to see the category doing so well; it does tend to over- index for indie bookshops, but it has outperformed compared with the same time period across 2024-25, when just 34 titles represented G&LF. What of McFadden? Surely her

Elif Shafak ( 2) There Are Rivers in the Sky Penguin, £9.99, 9780241988749 At this point in 2025, Shafak had three different entries in the Indie Top 50 – fast-forward a year and that number has reduced to just one. However, third place for There Are Rivers in the Sky over a year since it was published more than compensates. Shafak’s latest is one of eight titles to have appeared in this indie bookshop Top 50 and the equivalent chart back in 2026.

David Szalay Flesh Vintage, £9.99, 9781529932423 The Booker Prize-winning Flesh is one of two titles – alongside Florence Knapp’s The Names – to feature in the Indie Top 50 twice, with both the hardback and paperback formats popping up. Flesh is not the only Booker winner on the list – Samantha Harvey’s Orbital appears for a second year running.
thrillers make up the other nine slots? Bad news for the Boston- based author: despite having 14 titles in the UK-wide Top 50, none of those makes it into the indie ranking. In fact, in the list of the Top 200 bestselling fiction titles for indie bookshops, McFadden appears only once – in 55th place with The Housemaid. Only three authors have more
than one entry with the indies, led by Bob Mortimer, who finds all three of his fiction titles appearing in both the full TCM Top 50 and the indie equivalent. Florence Knapp’s The Names appears twice in both charts, with both the hardback and the paperback proving popular, while Asako Yuzuki’s Butter and Hooked – both translated by Polly Barton – have been a hit with indie book- shops, though the latter has failed to make it into the UK-wide Top 50.
