Marketing and distribution manager UCL Press

1 Describe your role

I’m marketing and distribution manager for UCL Press, the UK’s first fully Open Access university press. We’re a young press, having just celebrated our first birthday, and publish both Open Access books (monographs, textbooks and much more besides) and journals. I look after everything post-publication, which includes author care, all of our marketing and publicity, and also how and where we distribute both Open Access and print copies of our titles.

What do you like best about your role? There are so many things that I love about my job. It’s an extremely rare honour to have joined such a fantastic press in the very early stages, and it’s been extremely satisfying to watch things develop. We have an excellent team and the sheer variety and quality of our list ensures that things are always fresh.

Which new projects are you working on at the moment? We’ve just launched a new issue of the journal of the Sylvia Townsend Warner Society, which is something I’d encourage people to go and have a look at. She’s a ridiculously under-rated writer, well deserving of more academic study, and a wider general readership.

Which skills are useful in publishing recruitment? Every marketer I’ve known in academic publishing has a good balance of both creativity and analysis—one is essential for actually creating and undertaking the marketing plans, and the other for working out what’s worked or hasn’t. A thirst for knowledge, and an ability to understand often complex things quickly, is essential.

What advice would you give to those looking to work in the industry? Keep an open mind and embrace any opportunities—I loved my time working in B2B and STM publishing, and I wouldn’t have expected to. Beware of falling into the trap of thinking that publishing is only trade or editorial. Some of the most rewarding jobs are outside of these areas and well worth a look.
