Pilkey and Bluey rule in Ireland and Australasia


Australian children’s TV sensation Bluey dominates the kids’ bestseller list in its homeland, while Dav Pilkey’s Dog Man series is a hit across the continent, and in Ireland, too

If not for a small blue dog, American cartoonist and author Dav Pilkey would have scored a hat-trick across the Australian, Irish and New Zealand children’s chart for the year to date. However, the titular star of ABC Kids show “Bluey” has dominated the Australia chart for 2021 to date with seven titles in the top 10. Bluey: The Pool tops the chart, with 58,269 copies sold, and Bluey: Easter Fun scored second, pushing Pilkey’s Irish and New Zealand (and UK) bestseller Dog Man 10: Mothering Heights into third. But Pilkey seems to have hit a particular chord in Ireland. Mothering Heights easily claimed the top spot, with 12,312 copies sold, and two other Pilkey titles—Dog Man series predecessor Grime and Punishment and Cat Kid Comic Club—charted fifth and sixth. World Book Day featured heavily in the Irish chart, with Tom Fletcher and Greg Abbott’s There’s a Wolf in Your Book leading the 2021 pack, as it did in the UK. Judi Curtin’s Lily and the Lissadell Ghost, the Irish World Book Day title, haunted 10th place. The BookTok YA revolution also seemed particularly important with Irish book buyers, as Adam Silvera’s 2017-published They Both Die at the End charted in eighth place, and E Lockhart’s We Were Liars, released in 2014, just outside the chart in 12th. New Zealand, activity books filled most of the kids’ chart, with My Fun Colouring Book in second and Inkredibles: Paw


Patrol Magic Ink in third. Homegrown picture book author Craig Smith’s The Grinny Granny Donkey, illustrated by Katz Cowley and part of the international phenomenon that is The Wonky Donkey series, charted seventh. Children’s sales looked to be healthy across the board, with all three territories posting double-digit value growth. Ireland was up 19% in both volume and value against the previous year, with Australia posting a 7% rise in volume and a 14% jump in value compared to 2020. New Zealand, compared to the same period in 2019, given there were some 2020 data gaps, was up 18% in volume and 15% in value.
