ally Rooney is once again the indies’ darling, with Normal People topping the 2019 fiction
chart for independent booksellers. Her début, Conversations with Friends, charted fiſth and the hardback of Normal People placed 17th—making it the only title to appear twice in differ- ent formats. Rooney’s second title was, of course, named Nibbies Book of the Year in May and Waterstones Book of the Year last December, racking up a host of nominations, Booker and Costa Prize among them, along the way.
However, Margaret Atwood’s The Testaments,
released just three months prior to this chart’s compilation, stormed to second place. This is not really a
