Can you finish the sequence? Identifying and making patterns and simple sequences is essential for
developing and strengthening a young child's working memory. Use any objects at home to create patterns and sequences, such as buttons, pasta
shells, pebbles, toy figures, etc. Choose only a few different coloured and shaped objects to begin with and ask the child what colour they think should come next at the end of the pattern. Once a child understands the concept and has completed lots of patterns and sequences that you have created, you can extend this activity by adding different shapes and more colours.

Can you pick out the colour?
Add transparent shapes to your mood board for a mess-free colour exploration activity. Call out a colour and ask the children to choose the correct splat. When moving on to colour mixing, children can explore the splats without adult direction by simply placing one colour on top of another and observing the colour changes through the light. Many language development opportunities emerge as children make exciting discoveries while playing with the shapes.

Can you make a word? Using a small brush to look for hidden letters
on the sand is a fun way of incorporating fine motor skills into phonics play. Begin by adding a
small number of letters and asking the child to find the sound hidden in the sand. When they find the letter, the child should repeat the sound and say which letter it is. Can they think of a word beginning with that sound? You can also try this activity in reverse.
When moving into word building with CVC, you could ask the child to find the letters to make 'cat'. Then, ask them to make more words by swapping sounds. For example, 'Now you have made CAT, can you make HAT? Which part of the word is going to change? You can continue to use this phoneme manipulation activity as the child is introduced to more vowel sounds..
