Ascom wins ‘outstanding’ care

Sarisbury Green home plans are given the green light

Proposals for a new 75-bed care home in Sarisbury Green have been given the go ahead by Fareham Borough Council. The planning application, submitted by specialist healthcare property developer Prime Plc, was passed on Wednesday 12 December 2018. Plans for the care home had initially been

rejected, following concerns over the access point for the new facility. However, Prime worked closely with council officers to amend the proposals and ensure a safer traffic solution could be found, which would allow the much-needed facility to gain planning approval. Bob Smaylen, development director for

Prime, says: “Using our expertise in community

care facilities and healthcare property development, we presented a revised proposal, which would address the undersupply of high quality care home places in Sarisbury Green and, in particular, the lack of specialist dementia care. We are delighted that the changes we made to the plans have been rubber stamped by the council.” As well as providing 75 high quality care home beds for the area, the facility, which will be operated by Care UK, could also create up to 80 jobs, providing a real boost for employment in the area. The care home itself will also feature facilities that will be open to the public, such as a hair and nail salon and a coffee bar.

Springhill home celebrates ratings upgrade

A ‘vastly improved’ care home in Kilmarnock has cause for celebration after receiving rating upgrades from the Care Inspectorate. Inspectors visited Springhill Care Home,

Portland Road in September and judged it to be grade 4 (‘good’) across all areas; this incorporate quality of care, quality of staff, environment, leadership and management. The news was made even more special as it was the care home’s first inspection since being taken over by Silverline Care in 2017. Since then, Silverline Care has made a significant investment in the property to improve the environment for residents. In its report, the Care Inspectorate stated: “The new provider has invested heavily in the

refurbishment programme for the care home, which has included repairing the roof and external building work, replacing the entire kitchen and laundry facilities. Extensive work has been carried out within the care home and this is an ongoing work in progress.” The Inspectorate said it had received many

positive compliments from stakeholders including: “I feel that I can relax knowing that my relative is being cared for.”; “The staff are friendly, very caring and understand my relatives needs very well.”; and “They show kindness and compassion towards all of the residents.” The upgrade is another boost for Springhill

Care Home, which received an award at the Quality Improvement Awards on Tuesday

Ascom’s Myco smartphone with emergency call and wander management technology, which is especially important to those with dementia. The smartphone will provide alerts of resident alarm calls as well as details of staff caseloads for the day. Anita Astle, the owner of Wren Hall, says: “I am confident that this technology will help us to move to a utopia for care staff - having one sophisticated mobile device that helps them to deliver the best care. “We will be able to respond more quickly to individuals’ needs – not only to those who have fallen, but also those who are about to get out of bed and may need a hand to move about safely.

“It will reduce falls and the fear among some individuals that they might fall. It will help keep them mobile and give them the increased confidence and sense of self-worth that is so important.” Paul Lawrence, managing director for Ascom UK, says: “We are proud to work with this care home which has been renowned for its excellence since 1996. We are helping them enhance the high quality of care they already provide, with Ascom solutions that will work seamlessly with existing technology.”

13 November. Springhill, in collaboration with Gargieston Early Childhood Centre and the Care Inspectorate, received the top prize in the Most Inspiring / Innovative category for the implementation of an intergenerational programme.
