Staff training

things were mishandled or in some cases, ignored. We try to encourage colleagues to get past their preconceived ideas and we ask them to reflect on their own situations, how they felt and how others and themselves reacted. On the whole, we try to press the fact

that there is no right and wrong when it comes to sexual expression and sexuality, there is just a person and their own views and feelings. It is our job to support every person in our care to live as full a life as possible in what are sometimes challenging circumstances. Some people want to have sexual

experiences but some just want to feel desirable or confident, something that

is a basic need in everyone. We try to emphasize that it is up to the person what they want but it is up to us to help them explore, express and satisfy their needs and wants in a non-judgmental and supportive way.

Long-term benefits The training has been successful so far, with colleagues across the company proving to be receptive. Many colleagues have really embraced the new concepts and have subsequently offered to support other colleagues who may be less confident. While others have even shown an interest in taking this forward within their own workplaces. Many colleagues have left the

training feeling passionate in ensuring that service users have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. Some colleagues who initially felt that the training was inappropriate and not relevant to their role, changed their perspective and mindset. Exemplar Health Care plans to

relaunch the training in January 2022 when we hope to be able to conduct more sessions with larger groups.
