The Importance of Collaboration in Independent Safety Monitoring and Cost Savings

Care Campaign for the Vulnerable (CCFTV) has long championed greater transparency and enhanced safety in care homes. We believe that independent, choice-led safety monitoring is one of the most effective ways to improve care quality while also realising significant cost-saving benefits. Although many providers recognise these advantages, concerns over affordability and practical implementation often stand in the way. By working together – providers, campaigners, and technology partners – we can develop solutions that balance safety with financial viability. In my role as Director of CCFTV, I actively support families at best interest meetings following incidents such as unexplained injuries and falls. Far too often, we see providers conducting lengthy investigations into incidents, with a lack of clear evidence leaving families distressed and uncertain. This uncertainty also affects care staff, many of whom face suspension while external agencies investigate. The resulting impact on staff morale can lead to shortages, an increased reliance on agency staff, and difficulties in maintaining continuity of care. Both families and providers face emotional and financial burdens when incidents remain unresolved. Fortunately, there are proven safety monitoring technologies that

offer clarity, accountability, and peace of mind. Our goal is to work collaboratively with providers to implement these systems effectively, ensuring that safety monitoring is both accessible and cost-effective. To achieve this, CCFTV is partnering with Care Protect and ERA

Group Global –organisations dedicated to improving safety and efficiency in the care sector.

Care Protect and the PRISM System Care Protect delivers an independent monitoring solution known as the PRISM system (Professional Retrospective Independent Safety Monitoring). Operating since 2015, PRISM uses motion-triggered camera technology enhanced by GDPR-compliant, banking-grade end-to-end encryption and secure off-site cloud storage. These systems are installed in communal areas and, where appropriate, in bedrooms for vulnerable residents, including those living with dementia. The primary purpose of the system is to improve resident safety by identifying potential risks; it also empowers care staff by providing a safer working environment and serves as a robust quality assurance tool. https://care-protect.co.uk/

Importantly, installations of the Care Protect system are only activated on an opt-in basis following a Best Interests Decision or consent protocol, ensuring that residents’ rights are fully respected.

Recordings are reviewed retrospectively and reactively on request, as well as proactively for predetermined periods, with a focus on key events such as unwitnessed falls and unexplained injuries. The independent reviews produce clear reports and monthly statistical analyses that not only highlight areas for improvement but also celebrate exemplary care. Homes that install Care Protect have found that, in many cases, the reviewing costs are, at worst, cost-neutral due to the substantial time saved on safeguarding processes and incident investigations.

ERA Group Global’s Contribution ERA Group Global works alongside care providers to manage cost inefficiencies and maximise resources. Their expertise enables providers to reinvest the savings they make into vital areas such as staffing, training, and

innovative safety solutions. This approach helps to maintain high care quality while keeping financial pressures in check. https://en.eragroup.com/

The Financial and Operational Benefits Investing in independent safety monitoring is not merely about improving care – it is also a sound financial decision. Proactive safety measures can substantially reduce costs related to safeguarding investigations, as clear evidence helps resolve incidents quickly and prevents lengthy, expensive inquiries. Furthermore, transparent monitoring lowers the risk of disputes escalating into costly legal cases. Early identification and resolution of issues also boost operational efficiency, enhance staff training, and reduce turnover.

A Shared Commitment to Safer, Sustainable Care At CCFTV, we firmly believe that real change in social care comes from collaboration. Families deserve reassurance that their loved ones are safe, care providers deserve the tools necessary to support their staff, and care staff deserve protection from unfair blame and extended suspensions. By partnering with organisations such as Care Protect and ERA Group Global, we are demonstrating that independent safety monitoring is a vital tool for ensuring transparency, accountability, and financial sustainability in care.
