Athena Care Homes plants 5,000 trees with Ecologi
Family-owned Athena Care Homes has planted 5,000 trees in Kenya, Morocco, and Madagascar in a drive to become more sustainable.
The business operates award-winning homes in Norfolk, Ipswich, Cambridgeshire, and Peterborough. Having established its first care home, Amberley Hall in Norfolk, in 2014, the company now owns and runs five homes. Committing to reducing its impact on the environment, Athena has pledged to plant five trees for each resident who moves into one of their care homes across East Anglia. So far, Athena has planted 5,000 trees with environmental organisation Ecologi. As a direct result of Athena’s contributions, Ecologi has been able to help with the restoration of forests in Kenya, save an endemic Moroccan fruit tree species, and plant mangroves in Madagascar. Whitby care home welcomes mayor to topping out ceremony
The Mayfield Care Home, Whitby, Yorkshire, has welcomed local luminaries to its topping out ceremony. Scheduled to open its doors in March,
the 66-bed luxury home will provide residential and dementia care and create 65 jobs. It is being developed by LNT Care Developments and will be operated by family-run Cromwell Care. The home boasts a state-of-the-art cinema, a hair and beauty salon, and a café. The design of the home incorporates solar panels and ground source heat pumps.

Hertfordshire care home invests in solar energy
Foxholes Care Home, near Hitchin, has installed 132 solar panels on the roof of the building, enabling it to offset a large proportion of its daytime electricity consumption. A five-figure investment in solar will enable Foxholes to cover more than a third of its yearly energy costs. Built by renewable energy installation specialist Use The Sun, the carbon-saving system consists of rows of ground-mounted solar modules, each with the capacity to provide up to 390w. Set in 18 acres of sprawling Hertfordshire countryside, Foxholes Care Home was
purpose-built in 2012 and provides both residential and respite care. Neil Gandecha, care director at Foxholes Care Home, said: “With energy costs rising each year, this project has been in the pipeline for some considerable time now – but, with skyrocketing energy prices, the timing of it finally coming together couldn’t be better. Wholesale electricity costs aside, we’re delighted to see our vision come to life on an environmental level – as the impact cannot be overstated. Self-generating our electricity will significantly decrease our overall carbon footprint, which will help us in our decarbonisation strategy for 2023. “As a family-run business, we feel it’s important to not only become greener, but also to help the country by taking some pressure off the national grid. Here at Foxholes, we want to become an ever more environmentally focused community and this represents our determination to do so. By doing our bit, we’re making a considerable difference in terms of carbon emissions, which inevitably contributes to the fight against climate change – something we are eager to contribute to.”

Councillor Wild said: “As the Mayor of Whitby, the community is at the heart of everything I do, and The Mayfield Care Home will undoubtedly become a significant part our local community. It was an honour to visit the home and meet the team. We witnessed a hugely impressive building which will bring important jobs to Whitby, as well as much- needed accommodation for elderly people in Whitby and the surrounding area. We are looking forward to working with them in the coming months and years. The Mayfield Care Home team is passionate about the meaning of quality of life and I could see that in the team’s experience and focus, and the design and layout of the building.” Tobyn Dickinson added: “I’d like to thank The Mayor of Whitby and Councillor Nock for joining us for our topping out ceremony – it was an absolute pleasure to welcome them and give them a tour of our home. The Mayfield Care Home is coming together well and I’m sure our future residents will love everything we have to offer. The home will become a key part of the local community. There is a significant shortage of care home beds in Whitby, and we look forward to helping improve this situation.”
