INTERACTIVE COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY
‘Media wall’ technology installed at Rowan View
Without the keen eye of expert-by-experience, Alwin Verdonk, the solutions offered by Dutch media technology specialist, Recornect, would not – the company says – ‘be nearly as valuable and meaningful as they are’. Here, with input from him, Recornect Sales director and co-owner, Erik Kuijpers, explains how the company’s interactive ‘media walls’ will assist the recovery and treatment of service-users at Mersey Care’s new Rowan View 123-bedded medium secure hospital on the Maghull Health Park in Merseyside.
With this month’s completion of Rowan View on Maghull Health Park, Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust has created a modern setting for the innovative care model developed under the leadership of Dr Frank McGuire, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, and the lead for Rowan View’s Model of Care. Innovative approaches, therapies, and resources, were chosen for the development of Rowan View. One of the major innovations for secure care at Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust are the Recornect ‘media walls’. Installed in the seclusion rooms at Rowan View, they are designed to help clinicians offer service-users the right therapeutic and effective care, without bypassing self-management and the personal capabilities of the person undergoing treatment.
Innovative care model for safe recovery
When developing the care model for Rowan View, Dr McGuire spoke with leading experts, new starters, and above all, with those who might need the service in the future. Service-users and carers indicated that one of the things that is key for them is to know what is going to happen to them in an inpatient facility in terms of their care regime and treatment. They also want to know: ‘What do I have to do to get better?... to be able to go on to the next step in my recovery?... to

ultimately get back to the life I want to lead?’ Mersey Care clinicians have embraced this perspective, and created a new care model for Rowan View to address these needs in a modern and caring clinical environment.
Progressive approach to mental health needs
Rowan View signifies a real shift in secure care for vulnerable people – in that it takes a progressive, modern approach to the mental health needs of service-users. The very best consultant psychiatrists
and psychologists will work at the new facility, with services offered in a genuinely integrated and collaborative process of care planning set to include occupational therapy, social work, art therapy, and speech and language therapy. Dr McGuire explains: “To create the right setting for a safe recovery, we need a new generation of hospital services. Maghull Health Park offers us a unique opportunity to develop a knowledge-driven centre of expertise which brings together the vision, dedication, skills, and experience, of the best clinicians in this field.”
