www.dimhn.org JOURNAL OF THE DESIGN IN MENTAL HEALTH NETWORK Conference had ‘a real buzz’ about it

What an exciting and informative conference and exhibition we enjoyed in May. Later in this edition (pages 8-10 and 13-15) you will find articles covering some aspects of the conference, including information on our collaboration with the National Association of Psychiatric Intensive and Low Secure Units (NAPICU), but what you won’t find is what it was like to be present at the exhibition, the conference and the awards dinner. How do you explain something as intangible as an atmosphere in words?

With great difficulty, but I’ll give it a go. The atmosphere buzzed, it was electric, there was an enthusiasm in the air, smiles on faces, and a spring in everyone’s step throughout the two days, even towards the end, when exhaustion was starting to set in, particularly for those exhibitors who had been on their feet for two days. The hum of conversation increased regularly to a roar as old and new acquaintances got together to share information and experiences, and just to enjoy meeting each other. The opportunity to meet with people who care passionately about all aspects of mental health services, and spend their waking hours striving to improve the experience for all who use services is invaluable, exciting, and a learning opportunity. A conversation I had with one delegate perhaps conveys something of what it was like to be there:

of next year, are there specific things you would like to see? Do you know of an inspirational speaker on mental healthcare matters? If the answer to either question is ‘yes’, please drop me a line at jgill@dimhn.org and let me know. In closing, I’d like to thank everyone who worked so hard to make this year’s event such a success –

from our conference committee, to our members, to the exhibitors, to the speakers; it doesn’t just happen overnight, and your work and support are valued. Of course all that would be as nothing without the delegates and visitors, so thank you, and keep up the good work. I’d like to leave you with something a number of people said to me: ‘Thanks to the Design In Mental Health Network we are really starting to make a difference to the mental health environment.’
