Foreword

Science is advancing and we all have to keep up

Mark Reed – Chair, IBMS Company Members Committee European General Manager, Pro-Lab Diagnostics

Writing the Foreword for this year's The Biomedical Science Industry Handbook is a privilege and, as I’m sure you can imagine, somewhat of a challenge as we continue to move through turbulent times as a country and a professional industry. Leaving the politics aside for those with the required expertise is best I feel; a focus on the exciting challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the scientific world is more appropriate. Our chosen market never stands

still, be it laboratory restructuring, consolidation, closure, and, of course, the continuing emergence of the private sector. You don’t have to venture too far around central London these days to see the new state-of-the-art pathology service facilities employing the most recent advances in testing techniques and laboratory automation, or the new research centres for biomedical science –

a prime example is The Francis Crick Institute adjacent to St Pancras International. Research into faster, more accurate and

reliable testing platforms and technologies continues, offering vast improvements to the clinical patient healthcare pathway. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) is advancing, and artificial intelligence (AI) is now a focus for many innovative companies. Where it will all end is anyone’s guess

really; what is for sure, however, is that it is rollercoaster that can’t be stopped. Science is advancing and we all have to keep up, be we on the commercial side or at the bench. Enjoy the ride, and enjoy the guide. It is

available electronically of course, but let’s all embrace the traditional hard copy and keep it to hand for easy and frequent reference.
