DIAGNOSTICS
technology allows users to continuously load samples in their primary tubes to minimise workflow interruptions and improve turnaround times.
n STAT sample testing: test urgent samples in their primary tubes even when the turntable is full.
n Programmable replicate testing: walk away while the OsmoPRO MAX performs replicate measurements from the same primary tube.
n Minimal user intervention: perform 500 tests before system fluid replacement is needed. Animations guide users through simple maintenance steps.
n Simple to use: a colour touchscreen and intuitive user interface enable staff of varying skill levels to operate the device.
The OsmoPRO MAX also boasts several key onboard quality control features. Daily statistical monitoring of QC is available via onboard Levey-Jennings control charts, while a lock-out capability enables supervisors to require passing QC before sample testing.
Real-time alerts can be set for out-of-range quality control, which alleviates the burden on laboratory staff.
Osmo1 we only need 20 µL. We’re actually using the Osmo1 a lot less than we thought we would, but we always have it if we do get a small sample or to use as a backup.” With staff training an area for which Megan is responsible, she had up to 50 members of staff to train on the new instrument. “For everybody involved the OsmoPRO MAX is nice and easy to use. The documentation that came with the machine is very useful to put into an SOP. Everyone using the machine has been able to pick it up and understand what they’re doing and they can also understand where they’ve gone wrong if it doesn’t work first time.” According to Megan, once the OsmoPRO MAX was up and running, the time saving was immediate. “So now a member of staff can come and put on their 20 samples, and then they can walk away from the machine and go and do something else, and then come back, and their results are all printed off, ready to go,” she explains. “The fact that the machine can automatically run everything in duplicate is great without a member of staff having to come back and put them all through again.”
Further advanced automation features also help Megan’s laboratory avoid issues. “I love the fact that I can program it so
that if those results don’t match by a certain amount it’ll do a third repeat for me. That again saves people having to come backwards and forwards to run things.”
Benefits of the new instrument have been felt across the clinicians and patients served by the laboratory, as Megan details: “It also means that laboratory staff working out of hours and overnight can put a sample on and get a result rather than leaving it for the morning staff. This means quicker results for samples received from A&E; they’ve got their answer and so the service for them has improved.
“The OsmoPRO MAX has improved
our turnaround times and our staff are happier because they’re not sat there for hours on end doing the same thing over and over again. They also like the fact that there’s very little maintenance required; there’s a cleaning program to run at the start of the day, but other than that they’re not having to do anything other than put samples on.”
OsmoPRO MAX features n Automated pipetting: eliminate errors
and simplify osmolality testing for your staff by removing manual pipetting from your workflow.
n Continuous loading: flow-through

Real-time alerts can be set for out-of- range QC, which alleviates the burden on laboratory staff, while a status indicator enables users to see if QC testing has been performed successfully.
OsmoPRO MAX automatically transfers quality control data to the AdvancedQC Peer Group Program. Advanced Instruments’ web-based system allows your laboratory to compare your results for the manufacturer-recommended Protinol Protein-Based Controls and Renol Urine Osmolality Controls with other laboratories in real time and on a monthly basis. These capabilities enable laboratories to monitor QC trends and quickly spot shifts in instrument performance
Robust and secure data management and storage also features on the Osmo PRO MAX, with two-level user access with supervisor-defined permissions. Traceability is ensured via sample IDs, password-protected user IDs, and LOT recording enable result traceability. Each instrument retains a searchable database of up to 1,000 test records and 10,000 events, and can also easily export results to a laboratory information system (LIS), a USB, or an optional printer to eliminate transcription errors and minimise paperwork.
