Shaping the future of diagnostics David Wells – Chief Executive, Institute of Biomedical Science
Biomedical science is evolving rapidly – shaped by digital transformation, new testing technologies, and growing demand for faster, more equitable diagnostics. Across this changing landscape, the IBMS is ensuring that biomedical scientists remain recognised, supported, and central to how healthcare delivers for patients. Every stage of a biomedical scientist’s
career is now defined by the standards and qualifications set by the Institute. From accredited university degrees to the completion of IBMS Registration Portfolios, the Institute safeguards routes to Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration and ensures that those entering the workforce meet the highest levels of scientific and professional competence. This gives patients, employers, and regulators the assurance that diagnostic services are delivered by experts who are accountable and trusted. The IBMS continues to strengthen the
profession’s position in national workforce and diagnostics policy. By providing evidence, expertise, and leadership to the NHS, government, and partner organisations, the Institute is helping shape decisions about diagnostic capacity, workforce sustainability, and service design. This work ensures that biomedical scientists, clinical scientists and laboratory staff are properly recognised in discussions that affect patient access and the future of healthcare delivery. Professional development remains a
cornerstone of this influence. Through our specialist, higher and advanced qualifications, the IBMS gives members clear routes to recognition and progression.

These collaborations are helping ensure that innovation is introduced safely, effectively, and in line with the realities of patient testing and laboratory practice. Today, biomedical scientists are shaping the future of healthcare. The IBMS stands with them – ensuring their expertise drives innovation, informs policy, and secures the standards that keep patients safe. Through its members and partners, the Institute continues to define what excellence in diagnostics means for the UK.
