Innovation

skills, experience, and knowledge required to accelerate much-needed breakthroughs for better patient outcomes. Advocating the value and benefit of training and development in innovation and entrepreneurship is incredibly important at this time, if we are to create confident, empowered agents of NHS renewal. Techscaler3

is another positive initiative

offering tailored support for creating, developing, and scaling great tech ideas into startups. The possibilities for healthcare advancement are incredible thanks to this Scottish programme.

Workforce-led innovation This collective push is against the backdrop of persistent contemporary issues, such as health inequalities and climate change, where workforce-led innovation can truly come into its own. We know climate change represents the biggest risk to health of the 21st century. Health services will need to respond to the challenge by reducing their environmental impact, placing sustainability at the core of the organisation, and developing greener, more environmentally sustainable models of care. NHS Scotland’s 160,000-strong workforce can influence how the service mitigates and adapts to climate change impacts. This diverse group

are also particularly well placed to play a leading role in designing and developing greener, more resilient, and equitable health systems across Scotland. Striving for the NHS Scotland Net Zero target for 2040 must include inspiring the workforce to be drivers of change. They can be instrumental in adapting health

systems, lowering emissions, and coming up with sustainable ideas for equipment, use of digital technology, or manufacturing processes. For example, Nitrous Oxide mixed with Oxygen

is commonly used to provide pain relief during labour and has a detrimental effect on the environment, but a machine was identified by NHS Scotland which turns exhaled Nitrous Oxide into harmless Nitrogen and Oxygen. Nitrous Oxide has around 298 times the Greenhouse Gas Effect of Carbon Dioxide, so completely removing it represents a significant reduction in NHS emissions. When empowered to innovate, health and social care staff can be part of the climate
