The National Collection of Type Cultures (NCTC) is one of four Culture Collections operated by the UK Health Security Agency. Founded in 1920, it is the longest-established collection of its type, and serves as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Microbial Resource Centre (MIRCEN). NCTC holds over 6000 type and reference bacterial strains, many of medical, scientific and veterinary importance. The strains support academic, health, food and veterinary institutions and are used in microbiology laboratories and research institutes worldwide. All strains are available in a freeze-dried format and DNA from over 150 strains is available via the online catalogue

The National Collection of Pathogenic Viruses (NCPV) was established in 1999 and is one of four Culture Collections operated by the UK Health Security Agency. NCPV contains over 400 Hazard Group 2, 3 and 4 viruses, primarily human pathogenic viruses, from 21 families. The collection focuses on viruses of public health significance, surrogate viruses used for public health research, emerging diseases, currently circulating strains, vaccine strains and strains of historical interest. NCPV has developed particular expertise in preserving and distributing viruses responsible for current and emerging infectious diseases such as Rift Valley fever virus, and Zika virus and as well as distributing frozen live virus.
