FEATURES 19 MEETING THE CHALLENGE OF ‘NET ZERO’ CARBON
On 14 April IHEEM, HEFMA, and the Carbon and Energy Fund (CEF), officially launched their jointly produced document, A Healthcare Engineering Roadmap For Delivering Net Zero Carbon. At a webinar marking the launch, Dame Sue Ion, a Fellow of both the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society, addressed the topic, ‘Decarbonising the NHS in the Context of National Policy’. HEJ editor, Jonathan Baillie, reports.
27 UPDATED ROADMAP TO GUIDE TRUSTS TOWARDS ‘NET ZERO’
The updated version of the A Healthcare Engineering Roadmap For Delivering Net Zero Carbon document, authored by experts at the CEF, and with its development supported by IHEEM and HEFMA, seeks to help NHS Trusts meet the Net Zero carbon targets set out in the NHS strategy, Delivering a ‘Net Zero’ National Health Service. Here, CEF Technical Director, Stephen Lowndes, looks at the context within which the ‘Roadmap’ has been developed and published, and highlights some of the key actions required.
33 FLOW MONITORING PROVES KEY AS OXYGEN DEMAND PEAKS
During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, many NHS hospitals found themselves struggling for oxygen capacity. To help healthcare estates personnel and clinicians manage the situation, and ensure a sufficient ongoing oxygen supply, SHJ Medical Gas Specialists developed a new monitoring and alerting system, FLO2
, which works with
clamp-on ultrasonic or integral flowmeters to continuously monitor oxygen flow rate and line pressure.
39 OXYGEN CONCENTRATORS SENT TO HOSPITALS IN INDIA Three of eight oxygen concentrators specially assembled in Northern Ireland at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic’s first wave have recently been flown to India to help hospitals there struggling with oxygen supply. IHEEM Northern Ireland Branch Council representative, Nigel Keery, led the team which masterminded the preparation and transport of the units, in 40 ft containers, to Belfast International Airport for dispatch.
45 THE ‘VOICE OF ENGINEERING’ IN POLICY DEBATES
Presenting in the day’s first session as part of the webinar staged on 14 April, Dr Nick Starkey, Director of Policy at the Royal Academy of Engineering, discussed some of the ways the engineering community is looking to play its part in the UK’s drive to meet demanding Net Zero Carbon targets. He also highlighted a number of areas where the Academy feels efforts will need to be ‘scaled up’.
51 CONVERGING TECHNOLOGIES SIGNAL AN EXCITING FUTURE Karen Davenport, Frameworks director for BAM Construct UK, looks at how healthcare estates are set to continue a trend of evolution in expectations and delivery of new facilities. She believes 'technological changes support a more holistic approach to design and procurement'.
55 SPEED AND EFFICIENCY ARE MATCHED BY QUALITY
Alex Solk, a Partner at architects, Sheppard Robson, argues that that the best way of harnessing the benefits that Modern Methods of Construction offer is ‘to be dextrous enough to use multiple solutions’ – from volumetric pods and standardised structural elements, to panelised façade solutions and pre-approved products – ‘rather than being wedded to one approach’.
59 COMPLEXITIES OF COMPLIANCE IN DESIGN
Designing an accessible bathroom or washroom in a hospital or other healthcare setting requires strict legislative compliance, and a collaborative approach to avoid errors. Here Pete Davis, Product and Marketing director for Geberit and Twyford in the UK and Ireland, explores the various guidance documents and legislation to consider to achieve compliance, and why a proper understanding of these is key for Estates managers.
64 FLOW TESTING VITAL IN ENSURING RESILIENCE
Concerns around oxygen supply have dogged the response to COVID-19 for hospital Trusts around the UK. Since March 2020, healthcare engineers, MIG Medical Installations, have conducted more than 20 oxygen flow capacity tests for 12 hospitals in the UK. Here, MD, Anthony Mitten, details the importance of site-wide testing, and the impact it can have on contingency planning when high demand is placed on a piped oxygen delivery system.
