Volkswagen invests in circularity at Zwickau
Volkswagen is to invest €90m in automotive recycling at its Zwickau site in Germany, implementing various technical innova- tions and the use of AI with a gradual increase in capacity to 15,000 vehicles planned by 2030. The Volkswagen Group’s
circular economy strategy follows the ‘reduce and grow’ principle of cutting the use of primary raw materials and emissions while estab- lishing value creation, resilience, and innovation, with new business models such as recycling, refurbish- ment, and second-life applications opening up additional revenue potential. “The circular economy will become increasingly important for Volkswagen in the coming years,” said Andreas Walingen, Head of
Representatives from management and staff with State Minister for Economic Affairs Dirk Panter (third from right) at the announcement in Zwickau, Saxony, Germany
Group Circular Economy. “Specifically, we are pursu- ing the goal of reusing raw materials for the construc- tion of new vehicles. This will make Volkswagen less dependent on the global raw materials trade, reduce the CO2 footprint of its vehicles, and create new business models.”
By using data platforms
and AI, Volkswagen can efficiently track and control material flows, recycling processes, and business models. In addition, the Zwickau site, the company’s first to switch completely to e-mobility, is to play a central role in training.
