The offshore industry works closely together to share knowledge, experience and costs. Here we give an update on the latest Joint Industry Projects. Participants are welcome to join!
Joint R&D in Offshore JIPs GBS
When wind turbines are larger and need to be installed in deeper water a gravity based structure (GBS) construction can be a feasible option. However, to reduce the overall cost of offshore wind energy the workability of the installation process of these constructions needs to be optimised. This requires a better understanding of towing and the installation of these large concrete structures. This includes aspects like towing stability, tug handling, operational logistics, hydrodynamic response in waves and bottom interaction during the placement on the bottom. To keep pace with the growth of offshore wind development, the industry needs better tools to work in higher sea states but that are still able to carry out safe operations.
The objective of the GBS JIP is to improve the engineering methods of the transport and installation of gravity based wind turbine foundations, which will lead to more effec- tive, safer operations, better workability and optimised logistics. GBS is open for participants and will get underway in Q4.

In the new openDP JIP a software platform for the development and testing of dynamic positioning applications will be made available to project participants. The software frame work consists of a complete time- domain simula- tion model of a vessel in wind, waves and current, combined with a generic DP system and thrusters. User- defined software routines can be connected to the open DP framework through a range of different communication protocols.
This enables users to connect their own con- trol algorithms to the time-domain simulation model and investigate their performance. Us- ers can replace the complete generic DP sys- tem, or just a single component. In this man- ner, the participants can focus on the development of their own control algorithms, without the need to worry about the correct modelling of the vessel behaviour. The openDP is expected to start up in Q3.

The availability of accurate wind, wave and current coefficients is important in concept studies like dynamic mooring analysis or offloading feasibility. But it can be a chal- lenge to find a reliable and complete set of coefficients, especially at an early project stage.
The objective of this JIP is to build and deliver a reliable database of wind, wave and current load coefficients for modern day, generic ship designs. The database will be documented in a detailed way including the coefficients, hull shape drawings and drafts. A simple tool will be delivered to visualise and compare the database coefficients. Some basic functions such as a mean heading analysis and motion RMS based on frequency domain will be added to the tool to give each concept study a head start. The CoCoS JIP will kick-off in Q2 and will continue for two years.
