SALTO JIP launches Spring courses 2013

This spring MARIN will again organise the courses Offshore Hydrodynamics (February 11-15) and Ship Hydrodynamics I (March 11-15). Both courses will be held at MARIN’s head- quarters in Wageningen, the Netherlands and will give an overview of the latest developments, covering a broad range of fields. Case studies will be included.

For more information and registration please contact Saskia van de Peppel, +31 317 49 32 89, courses@marin.nl or visit www.marin.nl/courses.htm.

Heavy lift and marine contractors for offshore operations, planning and workability analysis expressed their interest in joining forces to learn more about operations in Arctic condi- tions. This has led to the launch of the Joint Industry Project Safe Arctic Logistics, Trans- port and Operations (SALTO). Within SALTO, a logistic planning tool will be developed to allow the user to make a risk-based proba- bilistic workability/logistic planning evalua- tion. If you are interested in participating or in receiving more information, please contact Albert Aalbers (a.b.aalbers@marin.nl).

2nd Natural Propulsion seminar January 17, 2013

both high-quality validation data, as well as analysing large sets of computational results comprising time-domain simula- tions with SurSim and Fredyn for in- stance, and RANS computations with MARIN’s in-house ReFRESCO Code. This work led to several co-authored publica- tions presented at the NATO Specialists’ Meeting in October 2011.

For thousands of years maritime transport has relied on nature’s power. Today with the twin challenges of volatile oil prices and impending environmental legislation, serious consideration must be given to economically viable, natural propulsion solutions. Last year a first seminar was organised to sustain new initiatives, share potential opportunities and to outline upcoming challenges. More than 100 academics, scientists, naval architects, shippers, entrepreneurs and innovators gathered and shared the latest developments and opportunities. Since this is a vital process, MARIN is organising a second Natural Propulsion seminar on January 17 in Wageningen.

For more details or registration please contact MARIN’s Greenship team, greenship@marin.nl.

For the first time MARIN will be present at Inmex Vietnam following the successful participation in Inmex China last November. You are more than welcome to visit us within the “Maritime by Holland Pavilion” of HME.

More than 4,000 visitors attend MARIN’s Open Day!

While celebrating its 80th anniversary, MARIN opened its doors to the public last October. More than 4,000 visitors experienced a real model test in one of the testing facilities, joined the captains on the simulator bridges and took part in the numerous interactive demonstrations.

Some 200 MARIN employees introduced the visitors to the fascinating maritime world of model testing and geometry on scale. And clearly the day was a success as visitors evaluated the event with an average high score of 8.6 out of 10. The Open Day took place during the Dutch October Month of Knowledge, an annual event introducing children to science and technology.
