No free lunches

ver the last couple of years multiple food producers have committed themselves to a journey. They have all signed agreements with the industry and with NGOs to gradually phase out eggs produced in caged systems and replace them with eggs from cage-free production. When the agreement was signed it was no more than a commitment with a horizon many years away. However, the heat has recently been turned up by welfare organisations, such as

Compassion in World Farming and the Humane Society, who reminded the food companies that there is no such thing as a free lunch. They exposed several major US food companies for failing to meet their public commitments to source 100% cage-free eggs from their egg supply chains by the end of last year. Of course, everyone has a role to play. NGOs are there to keep the industry on its toes and the egg industry is there to produce what is demanded. Food companies are at the forefront of demand and can make a difference. Fortunately, the situation is not all bad. The animal welfare organisa-

tion’s report noted that most food companies are making progress, although not always at the de- sired speed of the NGOs. Legislation will push more and more producers towards cage-free and eventually everyone will meet their commitment. That said, if food companies ask for cage-free now, the egg industry can match supply and demand and move towards a cage-free future, instead of waiting to be handed a legislative deadline.
