Keeping the coronavirus at bay


Processors around the world were hit by the coronavirus pandemic. With workers getting infected and plants closed, the vulnerability of the supply chain became obvious. One problem in the extremely effi- cient supply chain, immediately ripples through to every corner. A clo- sure of two processors in the US resulted in the culling of more than three million chicks and the same happened in Brazil. After the first in- fections came to light, processors instantly took measures to keep the coronavirus at bay. Extra hygiene protocols were introduced and work- places were made ‘corona-proof’ by installing separation walls. Re- search has shown that the working conditions in processing facilities are favourable to the coronavirus. Low temperatures enable the virus to remain contagious for a prolonged period of time while high ventilation volumes can spread it to wider areas.
