New layer houses in Ethiopia
Some 60 kilometres south of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, seven brothers of the Beza family are con- structing their layer operation ‘Kipland’. The rearing house is already finished. Two layer houses are being built in the second phase, each of which will house 25,000 layers. The brothers chose to give their facility the Dutch name ‘Kipland’ because one of the brothers – Ahadu Beza – studied and worked in the Netherlands. Fifteen years later he returned to his homeland to use his knowledge to contribute to the local food supply. The layer houses are equipped with a second-hand six-tier enriched cage system from Salmet that the brothers import- ed from the Netherlands. To keep the costs down thee of the brothers travelled to the Dutch farm to decon- struct the cage system themselves. There they also learned about the system’s inner workings while at the same time educating themselves with the help of the farmer. The Beza family hopes that their farm will be in full production by 2021.
