THOUGHTS ▶▶▶ It’s proverb time

he quaint English proverb to “lock the stable door after the horse has bolted” means that action is be- ing taken after the damage is done. The proverb applies quite well to the situation in some countries with respect to African Swine Fever (ASF). From time to time the world hears of yet another country in Europe or Asia that is being hit by the virus. I see a parallel in quite a few of them. Once confronted with the virus, suddenly they want to know all about it: “How on earth did this virus get in? Where can we order vaccines? We need better biosecurity!” Relevant comments, I would say. So let’s answer them in this edition. How did the virus get in? To get the best answer to that question, let’s turn back the clock. Even thousands of ocean miles could not stop ASF in the 1970s and 1980s when the infection reached four countries in the Americas. How? Start your historical journey on page 6.

T Where can we order vaccines? Research institutes worldwide are working hard, and early hopes are being ex-

pressed in places. An overview of the state of affairs can be found on page 22. We need better biosecurity! No country in the world realises that better than Denmark. In my opinion, the Danes are tak- ing action where action should be taken: right at the border. Starting on page 10, Pig Progress observed how they are doing this.

After all, another great English proverb sums it up perfectly: “Forewarned is forearmed.” Vincent ter Beek, editor Pig Progress
