THOUGHTS ▶▶▶ Russia: Opportunities and concerns
The dairy industry in Russia is booming, with domestic production rising over the last few years and increasing by more than 30% between 2019 and 2020 (see report on page 28). The same results can be seen with local cheese producers, which are also experiencing an upward trend. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, last year the gross milk yield in all farms exceeded 32 million tonnes, which is 855,000 tonnes more than in 2019 – the best result in the last decade! Also, the average milk yield per cow shows a record increase. It’s no wonder that the dairy market in Russia is one to watch; with new markets pushing export volumes to new heights, there are opportunities to grow and become an even bigger sector. There are concerns within the sector, though, regarding the cost of raw materials and milk processing and decline in household income. However, all in all, there are many interesting aspects of the dairy sector in Russia. We have some insights into these aspects in this edition – see pages 26, 28 and 30 for an in-depth look at this sector, as well as its strategies for dealing with mastitis and curbing the use of antibiotics.
