A temporary goodbye
hile growing up on a goat farm I witnessed many births, I saw goat kids being born but also kit- tens, foals, puppies, you name it. And now I’m going to be a mother myself! To some it may sound strange, but since I knew I was pregnant I often find myself trusting the knowledge I gained then and during my studies. For instance, when I approach it from a feed angle, during my studies I
learned that the first period of a newborn’s life is critical. How can you ensure the best start in life? A healthy gut seems to be the answer. A newborn inherits the intestinal flora from the mother. And that’s what makes me obe- diently take my vitamins and probiotics every day. To take it one step further, it seems that we humans, like ani- mals, also need time to create a “nest.” On the farm I saw animals gathering nesting material and retreating to a quiet place. Humans get an obsessive urge to clean the house and start washing baby clothes, all in or- der to create a perfect cozy home. Having said that, you’ll now know what I’ll be doing for the coming weeks, during my maternity leave. It’s hard to let go of All About Feed for a while, but fortunately there’s a great back-up team. I’ll be back in January, and who knows, the knowledge I gain as a new mom may provide new insights and thoughts for All About Feed, just like the animals on the farm did in the past.
