School Transportation News Published by STN Media Group

The January special report, “Eagle Eye on Transportation Safety” looked at the intersection of technology, training and on-board school bus cameras. While new technology supports school bus safety standards, experts explained that training is needed to make sure the equipment is used to the best of its ability and to prepare drivers for safety-related incidents. We have these where I work and our drivers and staff love it! Facebook/ Renée Rapp Turner

Forward-facing cameras should be required on all buses! Saved many drivers from being incorrectly held responsible. Our new buses have them installed on center of windshields facing the road ahead. Although cameras around the entire exterior of bus would be great and pay for themselves! Facebook/ Lynne Raia-Welsh

Tragedy struck a Maine school district, when a student was killed after being caught in the school bus loading doors and dragged 280 feet. Read more about the National Transportation Safety Board’s preliminary report at stnonline.com/go/oh.

It hurts my heart when I read or hear about things like this happening. As a parent I cannot even begin to comprehend the parents’ grief that occurs in incidents like this. There are solutions with technology and training that can help prevent or at the very least mitigate events like this. One child is too many. LinkedIn/Ron Deming, Radio Engineering Industries (REI)

I’m a school bus driver [for] 14 years. Our policy is the student had to clear 15 feet from the bus before we pull away. Check your mirrors from all angles twice then proceed on. This is something that can never be taken lightly. Facebook/ Linda Santiago

Mirrors, mirrors, mirrors. As a school bus driver, we have mirrors that see it all. I’m not saying accidents can’t happen, but they happen when procedures are not followed, rushed schedules and pressures of the job. I know in my heart that the driver is probably absolutely broken. We get to know these kiddos and have a priority to keep them safe. This will remind me to slow down and make sure every procedure is done before moving. So sad. Prayers for all. Facebook/Billy Gray

Winter weather brings unique challenges for the student transportation industry and transportation departments gear up for difficult driving conditions and specialized maintenance strategies. Read the special report at stnonline.com/go/oi.

Thanks to @stnmagazine for featuring the training bus drivers undergo for the unpredictable Colorado weather. Staff members from @greeleyschools and Colorado School District 11 speaking on school bus cold weather maintenance and specialized mountain driving. X/@codepted, Colorado Department of Education
