In December, Bus Safety Solutions announced its Extended Stop Arm products are now installed on over 1,000 school buses nationwide. One Virginia school district found the extra length reduces the number of times motorists illegally pass a stopped school bus by 89 percent. Read more at stnonline.com/go/85.


All I see is cars hitting or swerving to avoid that stop arm. Seems they don’t know the answer to this problem. Cameras on the stop arm. Don’t worry about getting the driver, all you need is the car. Editor’s note: The following response to the question of vehicles hitting the extended stop arm is from Scott Geyer, vice president of Bus Safety Solutions.


Great question! Very few accidents occur. We sell about five com- plete replacement units per year due to accidents of 1,000 units on the road, 180 days a year—180,000 bus days. So, you have about three one thousandth of a percentage chance of someone crashing into your sign hard enough to need a complete re- placement on any given day you drive a bus. Minor accidents are more common, although still infrequent. The sign many scrape the hood of a car or ding the side. Due to the construction of the product, it rarely needs anything more than a re-adjustment of the sign. Bus drivers report that offending motorists typically flee the scene, but do not reoffend. Most people just quit running your arms and they adjust to it quickly.
