similar to those of First Student, where caring for stu- dents is our first priority.” Kenning noted that districts considering part-
nerships with contractors can keep their focus and energy in the classroom. “Superintendents claim to have fewer headaches with contracted transportation services and can focus on their primary mission: To provide students with a quality education,” he said, adding that student transportation is challenging. “In addition to the complexity of daily operations, school districts are caught between increasingly limited resources and ever-changing demands for services. Each year, more school administrators are discover- ing the value and benefits of converting to contracted student transportation services. It is a proven road to cost reduction and service enhancement.” As McGowan was speaking with School Transporta-
tion News, he was driving back from the the 2023 Winter Institute hosted by the Council of School Superinten- dents and the Leadership for Educational Achievement Foundation, where he was also recognized by his col- leagues and peers. He noted that his school board, many
members of the district’s leadership team, and his family were all in attendance. “You’re talking to me in a moment where, although I’m
happy to question the validity of the individual nature of the award, relative to the contributions of a team, I would dare say that nobody’s earned the love and joy that was given to me this weekend. “I’m very happy to say that this individual honor is an odd experience because we really do this as a team and our team has made it happen,” he concluded.
