AIR CARG O WEEK

ASIA PACIFIC

SUPPLEMENT

CHINA, VIETNAM, SINGAPORE: FREIGHT KINGS OF THE FUTURE!

O

ver the next few years, the Asia Pacific airfreight industry is poised for significant growth, with a trio of countries emerging as key players. Notably, China, Vietnam and Singapore stand out due to strategic investments and expanding roles in global trade.

China barely needs any introduction as a dominant force in manufacturing

and e-commerce. This is why China continues to drive substantial airfreight demand. Recent surges in e-commerce have led to increased flights and higher freight rates, particularly to the US and Europe. For instance, in October 2024, airfreight rates from Asia to the US rose by 49% year-on- year, with China playing a significant role in this uptick. Slightly more under the radar, Vietnam is rapidly becoming a

significant hub for air cargo, especially in the e-commerce sector. The country has experienced extraordinary capacity growth, catering to increased air cargo demand in North America and Europe. Notably, capacity from Ho Chi Minh City to North America grew by 359% year- over-year, with rates to the US reaching $6.38 per kilo. Like China, as an airfreight player, Singapore needs little introduction.

Changi Airport is reinforcing its position as a leading air cargo hub in Southeast Asia. Despite global economic slowdowns, Changi handled 1.85 million tonnes of airfreight in 2022 and continues to invest in expanding its cargo connectivity and capacity. The airport’s strategic location and continuous enhancements make it a pivotal player in the

region’s air freight landscape. These developments underscore the dynamic nature of the Asia

Pacific airfreight industry. The region is experiencing a massive surge in e-commerce, driven by platforms like Alibaba, Lazada and Shopee. This growth has increased demand for fast and reliable air freight services, particularly for cross-border shipments. Countries like China, Vietnam and Singapore are capitalising on this trend, with significant investments in logistics infrastructure. Asia Pacific sits at the crossroads of major global trade routes,

connecting North America, Europe, and Africa. This strategic advantage facilitates increased cargo traffic and encourages multinational companies to establish logistics hubs in a region where a growing middle class is driving demand for perishable, pharmaceutical and high-value goods, which require airfreight due to time sensitivity. This trend provides a lucrative market for specialised cargo services. There are challenges, of course, facing the region. Global economic trade

uncertainties, disputes and fluctuating fuel prices pose

significant risks to the air freight industry everywhere. While the Asia Pacific airfreight industry is primed for growth due

to e-commerce, strategic location, and infrastructure investments, it must navigate challenges like economic volatility, environmental pressures and competition. Adaptability and innovation will be crucial for stakeholders to thrive in this dynamic environment.
